180724 Benchmark for infrastructure

The nation’s peak representative body for urban development has praised the move by Infrastructure Australia chief executive, Philip Davies, to improve transparency and accountability in infrastructure decision-making.

UDIA National Executive Director, Kirk Coningham, said too often infrastructure spending is designed to deliver short term headlines over long term benefits.

“Politicians from all sides have long recognised the need for rigor and transparency in infrastructure spending, yet the formula that distinguishes a popular local project from a solid infrastructure investment has remained elusive.

“Infrastructure Australia has delivered a set of principles that must now become the benchmark for all future infrastructure investment in Australia.

“The consistent application of these principles will go a long way to stripping the politics out of infrastructure delivery, building public confidence, and ensuring infrastructure investment delivers maximum benefit to our growing population.

“The UDIA also recognises Phil’s significant contribution to urban development during his time as CEO of Infrastructure Australia. His fearless and tireless advocacy has helped impose rigor and discipline in infrastructure investment that will continue to serve Australia well.”
